New3ie has created a map of systematic reviews on maternal health and mortality to consolidate what we know about 'what works' in reducing maternal mortality and improving health. This gap map also highlight areas where the evidence is weak or non-existent, thus pointing researchers to areas ripe for further study. 3ie’s analysis of 22 systematic reviews shows the impact of maternal health interventions on health outcomes ranging from health service utilisation and care to maternal mortality.Community-based interventions can lead to improvements in breast-feeding and infant mortality, but we can’t say clearly whether these interventions also reduce maternal mortality. We also need many more primary studies examining the impact of interventions like health financing and conditional cash transfers on maternal health. View map.
